A comedy

The packer Galy Gay goes out to buy a fish. On the way, he meets three soldiers from an English machine-gun unit. They have lost their comrade while breaking into a pagoda and now fear punishment. Without further ado, they make Galy Gay their fourth man, henceforth known as Jeraiah Jip. At first it's just the name. Eventually he takes on the identity of the other. With this parable about the transformation of the individual into an unconscious herd animal, Bertolt Brecht describes the rise of authoritarian and repressive tendencies in society. He counters the cynical seriousness of right-wing extremist agitation with enlightened humour, poems, songs and slapstick.

The music by Paul Dessau was arranged for Theater Basel by Evelinn Trouble.
