Martin Lüchinger, born in Suhr, trained as an electromechanic in Aarau and then studied mechanical engineering at the HTL in Brugg-Windisch. After several years as an engineer, he trained as an environmental engineer NDS in Muttenz. He then worked in Lucerne and at the Canton of Basel-Stadt in the Office for Environment and Energy (AUE). While working, he completed a postgraduate degree in non-profit management at the FHNW. From 2009 until his retirement, he headed the Waste Department at the AUE and was a member of its Executive Board. A resident of Basel since 1999, Martin Lüchinger has been involved in various cultural organisations on a part-time basis, either as president or on the board. In Aarau in the Kultur in der Futterfabrik (KiFF) association or in the Marie theatre, later in Basel in the Kaserne Basel and the Kulturbüro Basel. Martin Lüchinger was a member of the Basel-Stadt Grand Council from 2004 to 2017 and was a member of the Education and Culture Committee, among other things. He also chaired the Basel-Stadt Social Democratic Party (SP) from 2009 to 2013. Martin Lüchinger has been a member of the Basel Citizens' Community Council since 2021 and of the Foundation Commission of the Christoph Merian Foundation (CMS) since autumn 2023. He has been a member of the Board of Directors of Theater Basel since the 15/16 season.
