Trip into the night

A group of young people go out into the night. They are the grandchildren of the '68ers, who are already aware of the fading of the '68 movement. They live in a multicultural world, but not a just one. They do not believe in one God. They may no longer have any religious faith at all, nor do they believe that they can influence the world, the powerful constellations of capital, media corporations, nation states and the globalised market in any way. They have the vocabulary of contemporary discourse at their disposal, but what is their future if the lesson of the past is that it can no longer be reinvented? But on this evening they have something in mind. Nothing can be taken for granted in a city where every corner is familiar. Perceptions are heightened, as if it might be the last evening.

In this work, director Sebastian Nübling and director Boris Nikitin are working together for the first time and on a special form of theatre: a live film that is transmitted to the Schauspielhaus on a large screen. The result is a feverish, intoxicating portrait of a generation.

Incredibly good. (...) Everyone wonders what that was all about, but everyone agrees: 'Demons' is an incredibly successful contemporary document. Where it says "youth" on the label, there is rarely youth in it, but here the promise has been exceeded. "Demons" is not a vessel, it is an organism, a huge, insane, pumping organism, which you leave after three hours of "hopelessness!!!" with a surprising feeling of confidence: A world with such youth is not lost. Far from it.
Bajour
Rarely has theatre been so formally convincing and haunting in its portrayal of people in search of something like identity, who ultimately distrust even their view of reality and yet retain a sense of humour.
Nachtkritik
The players impressively bring out the ambivalent attitude to life in this "crazy chaos" that is the world, alert, in a thoughtful setting, with an absolutely captivating energy.
SRF 2 Culture
Sometimes everything comes across as casual and everyday, as in the Nouvelle Vague, sometimes it has the humour and aggression of Tarantino films. (...) An intoxicating scene event, precisely planned and rehearsed, a dance of death and exorcism in one.
Deutschlandfunk
The evening thrives on, indeed is inspired by, the irrepressible energy and vigour of the young players. (...) They throw themselves into it as if there were no tomorrow.
bz Basel
The audience in the Schauspielhaus follows the action on the screen so breathlessly that most of them forget that they were encouraged at the beginning to have a beer or a smoke in between. This alone is a reliable indicator of how well this theatre experiment with live cinema has succeeded. Hardly anyone would want to miss a single minute of this long evening. (...) Great cinema is a compliment to be taken literally this time.
